Abbreviations

It's not really hard to understand. Chatters use fast phonetics to express themself in a fast way. Because they are writing for long periods, they are used and bored to type all letters of words, so they have their own system, and it's common on all chat systems. The tricks is to write as you hear, and to avoid ambiguity in the expression. Some examples

"I see" becomes "ic" and "see you later" becomes "cul8er"
See the following table for more

Only to read "as is" written to understand. They also use other kind of abbrevations. Those are frequently used but are not about phonetics. Some examples:

when they want to express they are laughing or making something funny they will type "lol" (laugh out loud) or "lmao" (laugh mouth all open). Some variant exists.
"just kidding" becomes "jk" or "j/k". "No comment" becomes "nc". See the following table for more

Smileys

The smiley (also called emoticons, or emotions icons) are build to espress an emotion to others. Because it's difficult to vehicle emotions over text, a system of small graphics or codes exists like " :-) " .These text codes have to been horizontally read, the ":" are eyes, "-" is the nose and ")" the lips. Result: " :-) " a smile expression. On some chat system, the text code are automatically replaced by statics or animated icons with some differents face expressions. The most used are in the following table. Note that chatters may use capitals letters or not to make these smileys. They also often skip the "-" for the nose (ex: " :) " )
